A News Filter — The List of Non-Names
I have significantly reduced my news media consumption recently. For the most part, the news has become noise. I am not advocating that you be ignorant or not aware of important events in the world. Instead, nowadays you need to have a way to screen stories and content that are just not worth your time. I am suggesting one such filter that will save you time, allowing you to focus your attention and energy on more valuable content.
The Non-Name Filter
When I peruse headlines, I sometimes come across something that in context appears to be a name, presumably referring to a person. I, along with anyone else older than someone in the Millennial Generation, have no clue what this “name” is. In fact, someone might refer to it as a “no-name.” Usually in any industry there are the big brand names everyone knows, and there are the no-names that toil in obscurity. I will not use the term no-name because that still gives it the dignity that it’s a name. Instead, I refer to these things as “non-names.”
After compiling this list, I noticed that it derives mainly from the pop culture music realm. I did not intentionally target the music industry, but this is how the list worked out. I am sure as I expand the list there will be non-names from other categories. This list is in no particular order and is not all-inclusive. I did not make any of these names up. When I saw them I reacted like Kramer in The Reverse Peephole episode of Seinfeld when he heard the name “Joe Mayo” and thought it was made up.
Here is how to use the list to filter content. If you see any of these non-names in a headline or a story, just keep moving along. Skip that article and move on to something more edifying. But wait, will you be missing out on something magical, earth-shattering, or mind-blowing? I doubt it.
