A tool for faster and more effective brain training
All the experts say we’re supposed to be meditating. When I hear the word meditation, I think of sitting quietly and focusing on breathing. How boring! What is meditation, anyway? I consider meditation as a form of brain training.
I have tried different methods of meditation over the years. Various apps offer guided meditations, which are helpful if you are new to meditation. I tried Headspace, Waking Up by Sam Harris, and Calm. The apps are better than meditating on your own, but I never felt like what I did moved the needle. How do you even know if you’re doing it right? Some might say there is no right or wrong way to meditate, but I better get results for all the effort and time.
I graduated from college in 1999, and one of my majors was psychology. Back then, the belief was that once you become an adult, your brain is fixed. You lose neurons as you age and can’t make new ones. Since then, scientific discoveries have demonstrated that you can form new neurons in your brain. It’s called neurogenesis. So you can teach an old dog new tricks. I’m living proof after my experience at 40 Years of Zen.
