Long-time television viewers have been clamoring for a path away from the locked-in approach of cable companies. Satellite tv is perhaps a hair better than cable but still forces you to pay a set price for a bundle of channels regardless of which ones you actually watch. I had hoped with all the new competition that we would have true a la cart programming allowing us to pay for and watch only what we want to watch. Unfortunately the “unbundling” has led to a different problem — now there are multiple content creators and in order to get each one you have to separately pay for the service. To get Netflix shows you need a Netflix subscription, to get Hulu shows you need a Hulu subscription, to get HBO shows you need an HBO subscription, etc. Even if you “cut the cord” and get rid of cable/satellite, you are still paying a substantial amount if you want access to all the latest and greatest shows. I suppose this is a first world problem that can be remedied by not watching content and doing more productive things. Maybe Apple still has the chops to provide a novel solution to this problem, but I am not holding my breath.
